Marisa Bowers, PhD
Math / Science Tutor and Mentor
Marisa grew up in a small town outside of Boston. She graduated from high school as a member
of the National Honor Society and as a Senior Girl Scout. Marisa then moved to Eagle Rock, CA
to attend Occidental College where she majored in Biology. During college Marisa was accepted
into a summer research academy at City of Hope, where she participated in brain cancer
research in a neuroscience laboratory. This experience inspired Marisa to pursue research, and
led to her working in the same laboratory throughout the remainder of college, contributing to
two published novel research papers. After college Marisa attended the Irell and Manella
Graduate School of Biological Sciences at City of Hope, where she earned her doctorate in
Biological Sciences, with an emphasis on hematopoietic stem cells and leukemia. In early 2015
she published a first author research paper on her Thesis research in a distinguished
hematological journal. Currently she works for City of Hope as a science education outreach
coordinator, bringing hands-on science education and experiments to students in the local
school district.
Marisa has always loved working with children. In college she ran a mentorship program that
brought at risk youth to Occidental’s campus for fun and educational activities, as well an
opportunity to interact with college students in their local community. Marisa is in her third year
as a Girl Scout Troop leader, and loves engaging her Troop in STEAM activities such as First Lego
League Robotics. In her free time she is an avid Boston sports fan, enjoys reading, Disneyland,
the beach, and spending time with her friends and family.
